Preparing for Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Upgrade (MARTPT-33)
Course Description
Any applicant who has successfully completed our Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Upgrade (MARTPT-33) course within one year of application will satisfy:
The examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.466(a) for original issuance of an endorsement as Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessels (Near Coastal, Great Lakes and Inland, or Inland), PROVIDED applicant:
- Is endorsed as Master of less than 200 GRT for the scope requested in the application; OR
- Has satisfied the examination requirements for Master of less than 200 GRT for the scope requested in the application within the previous 12 months.
At the end of this course, students will learn about subjects specific to the Towing Vessel Industry including the following:
• Towing Vessel Operations
• Ice Operations/Navigation
• Navigation Safety Regulations
• Rules & Regulations for Uninspected Vessels
• Pilotage Laws in the United States
• Dangerous/Hazardous Cargo Regulations
• Barge Regulations (Operations)
• Charters
• Salvage & Maritime Liens
• Insurance
• Port Entry & Clearance Procedures
• ISM & Safety Management Systems
Prerequisites
Holds an endorsement of Master of less than 200 GRT
OR has satisfied the examination requirements for Master less than 200 GRT
