Apprentice Mate (Steersman) - Course #120
This is a 2 day USCG approved course.
Any applicant who has successfully completed our Apprentice Mate (Steersman) Upgrade (MARTPT-33) course within one year of application will satisfy:
The examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.466(a) for original issuance of an endorsement as Apprentice Mate (Steersman) of Towing Vessels (Near Coastal, Great Lakes and Inland, or Inland), PROVIDED applicant:
- Is endorsed as Master of less than 200 GRT for the scope requested in the application; OR
- Has satisfied the examination requirements for Master of less than 200 GRT for the scope requested in the application within the previous 12 months.
Each student can receive a personal copy of the TOAR (Towing Officers Assessment Record) from MPT Student Services to have completed on their vessel towards their upgrade to Master or Mate (Pilot). No further examination will be required.

• Salvage & Maritime Liens
• Insurance
• Port Entry & Clearance Procedures
• ISM & Safety Management Systems
This course will not satisfy the requirements for western rivers endorsements.
NOTE: This course may be taken in lieu of an examination at a USCG Regional Examination Center (REC). It is highly recommended to obtain the student course notes (manual/textbook) for pre-study prior to entering the training course.
