On top of satisfying the STCW training requirement for Terrestrial & Coastal Navigation, this class provides an excellent jump-start to prepare mariners for their challenging Navigation Problems: Near Coastal and Navigation Problems: Chart Plot exam modules at a Regional Examination Center (REC)!

Course Description

Terrestrial and Coastal Navigation - Course #200

This 10 day course includes:

USCG Examination prep for Master/Mate 500/1600/3000/ Unlimited; specifically for the following examination modules: 

  • Navigation Problems: Near Coastal
  • Navigation Problems: Chart Plot

Students who have successfully completed the course will satisfy the

  • The Terrestrial Navigation training requirements of 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(viii) for an STCW endorsement as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch (OICNW) for vessels of 500 GT (ITC) or more (Operational Level); AND
  • The Terrestrial & Coastal Navigation standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.309(a)(3) and 11.319(a)(3); STCW Code Section A-II/1 and Table A-II/1, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVICs 12-14(Ch-7) and 02-18(Ch-5) Tasks 1.2.A, 1.2.B, 1.2.C, 1.6.A, 1.6.B, 1.6.C, 1.6.D, 1.7.A, [1.7.B, 1.7.C, NVIC 12-14(Ch-7) only], 1.7.D, 1.7.E and 1.7.F; AND
  • The Terrestrial & Coastal Navigation standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.317(a)(2) and 11.321(a)(2); STCW Code Section A-II/3 and Table A-II/3, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 13-14(Ch-5) Tasks 1.1.A, 1.2.A, 1.3.A, 1.9.A, 1.9.B, and 1.9.C.

This course does not satisfy the Electronic Navigation or Celestial Navigation training requirements of 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(viii).

  • Measurement of the Celestial Sphere
  • Compass Error by Celestial Observation
  • Tides & Currents
  • Mercator Sailings
  • Coastal Navigation
This course includes use of MPT's SMART Full-Mission Bridge Simulator for training & assessment.

PASSPORT for Photo ID, Paper, Pencil, Pen, Highlighters, 1981 Nautical Almanac, Bowditch Vol 2 (1981, 2019, or 2024 Ed.), 1983 Lights List/Coastal Pilots, Maneuvering Boards, 3-Training Chart Set (13205TR Block Island Sound, 12354TR Long Island Sound – Eastern Part, 12221TR Chesapeake Bay Entrance), Plotting Tools, Scientific Calculator (TI-30Xa (not solar) is recommended)
