A mariner who successfully completes the course will satisfy the SMCP training requirements of 46 CFR 11.309(a)(4)(ix) and STCW Code Table A-II/1 Function: Navigation at the operational level; Competence of Use the IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases and use English in written and oral form for endorsements as OICNW on vessels of 500 GT or more. This course covers all topics in IMO Model Course 3.17, Maritime English (core section 2). Each student who successfully completes this course will: • Understand and use IMO Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) • Describe the background and purpose of the IMO SMCP • Demonstrate the use of the IMO SMCP • Explain the structure of the IMO SMCP
