The course provides trainees with the essential knowledge and understanding to be competent to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency until someone who can provide a higher level of care arrives on the scene.

This is a training course delivered in person through instructor-led classroom sessions. Instructional methods include lectures, guided class discussion, hands-on training with real equipment, and question-and-answer interaction to promote active learning and understanding.

Trainees are assessed through a written examination consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions and practical assessments of competence which align with task performance standards from the USCG's Guidelines for Qualifications for STCW Endorsements in Basic Training. Each student MUST:

• Determine whether resuscitation is required.
• Demonstrate the opening of the airway and checking for breathing.
• Demonstrate the proper action to take for an unresponsive person who is not breathing.
• Demonstrate the procedure for determining if a patient has a pulse.
• Demonstrate proper hand placement for chest compressions.
• Demonstrate proper Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for 2 minutes.
• Demonstrate proper actions for a conscious adult with a foreign body airway blockage.
• Demonstrate the proper series of actions for an unconscious adult with a foreign body airway blockage until attempts are successful.
• Demonstrate proper bleeding control techniques, taking into consideration the location and severity of the injury.
• Demonstrate the immobilization of a fracture using splints and ties within 10 minutes.
• Demonstrate generally accepted practices to prepare patient for spinal immobilization within 10 minutes.
• Select the proper bandage and/or cravat and demonstrate the bandaging technique for wound treatment that holds the dressing in place but does not interfere with circulation.

A passing score is required on the examination and successful completion of all task performance standards are required to demonstrate competence and complete the course.

Any applicant who has successfully completed our First Aid & CPR (MARTPT-197) course will satisfy:

• The Original Officer First Aid training requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(i)(1)(ii); OR
• The Original Officer CPR Training requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(i)(2)(iii); AND
• The Elementary First Aid standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(a)(3) and 12.602(a)(3); STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-3, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) Tasks 4.1.A, 4.1.B, 4.1.C, 4.1.D, 4.1.E, 4.2.A, 4.3.A, 4.3.B, 4.4.A, 4.4.B, 4.4.C, 4.4.D, 4.4.E, 4.4.F, 4.4.G, 4.4.H, 4.4.I, 4.5.A, 4.6.A, 4.6.B, 4.7.A, 4.7.B, 4.7.C, 4.8.A, 4.8.B, 4.8.C, 4.8.D, and 4.9.A.

Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
