Course Description
Compass – Magnetic & Gyro: OICNW - Course #210
This 2 day course utilizes the MPT SMART TM Simulation Center.
Any appicant who successfully completes Magentic & Gyro Compass will satisy the following:
- The requirements of 46 CFR 11.309 for meeting the standard of competence for compasses, magnetic and gyro, in Table A-II/1 for an STCW endorsement as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of 500 or more gross tonnage (ITC); AND
- The following practical assessments performed during this course have been determined to be equivalent of National Assessment Guidelines Tasks, as documented in NVIC 12-14(Ch-2) and NVIC 02-18: 1.6.A, 1.6.B, 1.6.C, 1.6.D, 1.7.A, 1.7.B, 1.7.C, 1.7.D, and 1.7.E; AND
- The requirements of 46 CFR 11.319 for an STCW endorsement as Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch on vessels of less than 500 GT; AND
- The requirements of 46 CFR 11.317 for meeting the standard of competence for Compasses, magnetic and gyro, for Table A-II/3 of the STCW Code, as amended. for certification as a Master on Vessels of Less Than 500 GT Limited to Near Coastal Waters; AND
- The requirements of 46 CFR 11.321 for meeting the standard of competence for compasses, magnetic and gyro, in Section A-II/3 for OICNW on Vessels of Less Than 500 GT Limited to Near Coastal Waters, and the Specific tasks from NVIC 13-14(Ch-1); 1.9.A; 1.9.B; and 1.9.C.
Applicants who have successfully completed our course need not present completed Task Control Sheets for these assessments in application for STCW certification.

1.6.A - Magnetic variation;
1.6.B - Correct for true heading;
1.6.C - Compass deviation;
1.6.D - Magnetic compass correction;
1.7.A - Determine the gyro-compass error by bearing of range 1.7.B - Determine magnetic compass error;
1.7.C - Determine magnetic compass deviation;
1.7.D - Determine course to steer by magnetic compass; AND
1.7.E - Position fix by magnetic compass bearings.

1.9.A - Determine magnetic compass deviation
1.9.B - Determine course to steer by magnetic compass
1.9.C - Position fix by magnetic compass bearings
