Course Description
This Maritime Security course is for all seafarers that have security duties as part of their job. The course is 8 hours in length and is typically offered in one day. This fulfills the STCW as amended requirement for VSPSD in accordance with STCW VI/6 for vessel security for personnel with security duties. If you are a Ship Security Officer please see course #171. This class often runs until 1800 (6pm).
There are no prerequisites for this course.

USCG APPROVAL PROVISIONS:
Has successfully completed Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD) (MARTPT-747) course satisfying:
- The VPDSD training requirements of 46 CFR 12.625(a)(1); AND
- The VPDSD standards of competence required by STCW Code Section A-VI/6 paragraph 6 and Table A-VI/6-2, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 21-14.
This course is accepted by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) UK and the Marshall Islands and includes.
Course Length: 8hrs
Course Objectives: The Vessel Security for Personnel with Security Duties (VSPSD) course is an instructor-led course and will cover the following:
- Knowledge of current security threats and patterns
- Recognition and detection of dangerous substances and devices
- Recognition of characteristics and behavioral patterns of persons who are likely to threaten security
- Techniques used to circumvent security measures
- Crowd management and control techniques
- Security-related communications
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and contingency plans
- Operation of security equipment and systems
- Testing, calibration, and maintenance of security equipment and systems, both ashore and at sea
- Inspection, control, and monitoring techniques
- Relevant provisions of the Vessel Security Plan (VSP)
- Methods of physical screening of persons, personal effects, baggage, cargo, and vessel stores
- The meaning and the consequential requirements of the different MARSEC Levels
- Familiarity with all relevant aspects of the TWIC program and how to carry them out
