Course Description

Upgrade OUPV Six – Pack to Master/Mate - Course #105

MPT’s Captains License classes are USCG Approved, NO TEST AT THE USCG.

This 3 day USCG Approved course will cover the written examination requirement for a candidate holding a Six-Pack OUPV License to Upgrade to a Master or Mate license of up to 100 gross tons (depending on experience).

The Masters and Mates level earns you the respect you have earned with years of boating experience as well as giving you the ability to serve on either inspected (7 or more passengers) or uninspected vessels as you choose. Another benefit is with the near coastal (offshore) route, with 6 pack you can go up to 100 miles offshore and with the Master you can go up to 200 miles offshore!

This course is approved for the following:


Any applicant who has successfully completed your Upgrade OUPV to Master 100 Tons (MARTPT-530) course within one year of application will satisfy the examination requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(j)(1) for original issuance of the following endorsements:

  • Upgrade from OUPV to Master of vessels of less than 100 GRT upon Near Coastal, or Great Lakes and Inland, or Inland waters, PROVIDED the applicant holds an OUPV endorsement or has met the examination requirements for OUPV within one year of application; AND
  • Increase in scope from Master of vessels of less than 100 GRT upon Great Lakes and Inland, or Inland waters to Master of vessels of less than 100 GRT upon Near Coastal waters

A course certificate may be used for one application which results in the issuance of an endorsement and may not be used for any application transactions thereafter.


This course does not satisfy the Rules of the Road: International and Inland examination requirement to remove a geographic COLREGS limitation from a deck officer endorsement.
