STCW Basic Training Revalidation
Course Length: 1 Day
Course Description:
This USCG-approved course satisfies the STCW requirements under Section A-VI/1 and Tables A-VI/1-1 and A-VI/1-2 for maintaining Basic Training competencies every five years. It is designed for mariners with prior STCW Basic Training certification and at least one year of qualifying sea service within the last five years.
Course Approval:
Any applicant who has successfully completed your Basic Training Revalidation
(MARTPT-718) course will satisfy:
- The Basic Training continued standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(d) and 12.602(d) for mariners who have previously held a Basic Training endorsement under STCW Code Section A-VI/1, PROVIDED that the mariner has at least 1 year of sea service within the last 5 years; STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Tables A-VI/1-1 and 1-2, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) Tasks 1.14.B, 1.14.D, 1.14.E, 1.14.F, 1.14.G, 3.7.A, 3.8.A, 3.8.B, 3.8.C, and 3.8.D.
Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
Course Objectives:
- Personal Survival Techniques: Demonstrate survival skills in the event of ship abandonment.
- Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting: Minimize fire risks, maintain emergency readiness, and extinguish fires.
Practical Assessments (NVIC 08-14 CH-1):
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting:
- Utilize the appropriate extinguisher and demonstrate correct firefighting procedures. (3.7.A)
- Demonstrate one of the proper donning methods for self-contained breathing apparatus. (3.8.A)
- Demonstrate proper use of the breathing apparatus under normal and emergency conditions. (3.8.B)
- Demonstrate proper hose team leader procedures for extinguishing extensive fires. (3.8.C)
- Demonstrate proper procedures for effecting a rescue. (3.8.D)
Personal Survival Techniques:
- Properly don an immersion suit within 2 minutes. (TASK 1.14.B)
- Jump into the water from a height of 1 meter while wearing an immersion suit, using proper methods to prevent injury. (TASK 1.14.D)
- While wearing a lifejacket, right an inverted raft rated for 6 or more persons within 10 minutes. (TASK 1.14.E)
- Swim 20 feet while wearing a lifejacket. (TASK 1.14.F)
- Keep afloat without wearing a lifejacket or immersion suit for at least 1 minute. (TASK 1.14.G)
Important Information:
- Mariners certificated under other maritime administrations should confirm acceptance of this course with their flag state.
- If you lack the required 360 days of sea service within the last five years, please enroll in the three-day refresher or five-day Basic Training course.
NOTE: If you are taking an STCW Basic Training Renewal/Revalidation for a country other than the United States, please verify with your maritime administration/flag state that they will accept this course. Some countries may require a longer course every five years and certain administrations may not recognize a course taken in the United States.
