Basic Fire Fighting (MARTPT-53)

This course provides trainees with the essential knowledge and understanding to demonstrate their competence in minimizing the risk of fire and maintaining a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire; and to fight and extinguish live fires.

This is a training course delivered in person through instructor-led classroom sessions. Instructional methods include lectures, guided class discussion, hands-on training with real equipment, and question-and-answer interaction to promote active learning and understanding.

Trainees are then assessed through a written examination consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions and practical assessments of competence which align with task performance standards from the USCG's Guidelines for Qualifications for STCW Endorsements in Basic Training. Each student MUST:

• Demonstrate the proper donning procedure for the fire fighter's outfit within 3 minutes.
• Utilize the appropriate extinguisher and demonstrate correct fire fighting procedures to extinguish a small live fire.
• Demonstrate one of the proper donning methods for self-contained breathing apparatus.
• Demonstrate proper use of the breathing apparatus under normal and emergency conditions.
• Demonstrate the proper hose team leader procedures for extinguishing an extensive live fire in an enclosed smoke-filled space.
• Demonstrate the proper procedures for effecting a rescue.

A passing score is required on the examination and successful completion of all task performance standards are required to demonstrate competence and complete the course.

Any applicant who has successfully completed our Basic Fire Fighting (MARTPT-53)
course will satisfy:

• The Basic Fire Fighting requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(h)(2), (3), and (4) [Basic only]; AND
• The Fire Fighting requirements for a national Tank Vessel or Tank Barge endorsement in 46 CFR 13.201(c)(3), 13.301(c)(3), 13.401(d), and 13.501(c)(3); AND
• The Basic Fire Fighting standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(a)(2) and 12.602(a)(2); STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-2, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) Tasks 2.1.A, 2.2.A, 2.3.A, 2.4.A, 2.5.A, 2.5.B, 2.5.C, 2.6.A, 2.7.A, 2.8.A, 2.8.B, 2.8.C, 2.9.A, 2.9.B, 3.1.A, 3.2.A, 3.2.B, 3.3.A, 3.4.A, 3.4.B, 3.5.A, 3.6.A, 3.7.A, 3.8.A, 3.8.B, 3.8.C, and 3.8.D.

Applicants who have successfully completed your course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.
