Course Description

Course 271 -Auxiliary Machinery

This is a 120 Hour simulator and workshop course and will cover marine engineering topics at the operational level per STCW Section A-III/1 and Table A-III/1.

Any applicant who successfully completed all modules of the Auxiliary Machinery (MARTPT-862) course will satisfy:

  • The Auxiliary Machinery training requirements of 46 CFR 11.329 (a)(4)(vi) for STCW endorsement as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW) on vessels powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW / 1,000 HP propulsion power or more (Operational Level); AND
  • The Auxiliary Machinery standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.329(a)(3); STCW Code Section A-III/1 and Table A-III/1, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 17-14(Ch-6) Tasks 4.3.M, 4.3.N, 4.3.O, 4.3.R, 4.3.S, 4.3.T, 4.3.U, 4.3.V, 5.1.A, 5.2.A, 5.2.B, 5.2.C, 5.2.D, 5.2.E, 8.1.A, 8.1.B, 8.1.C, 8.2.A, 8.2.B, 8.2.C, 8.2.D, 8.3.A, 9.1.A, 9.1.B, 11.1.A, 11.2.A, 11.3.A, and 11.4.A; AND
  • The ETSO training requirements of 46 CFR 11.329 (a)(4)(v) for STCW endorsement as Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch (OICEW) on vessels powered by main propulsion machinery of 750 kW / 1,000 HP propulsion power or more (Operational Level).

Each student who successfully completes this course will demonstrate the background knowledge and practical work to support operation and maintenance of equipment, in areas such as:

*  Basic construction and operation principles of auxiliary machinery systems;

*  Safety and emergency procedures for operation of auxiliary propulsion plant machinery including control systems:

*  Preparation, operation, fault detection and necessary measures to prevent damage for auxiliary machinery items and control systems

*  Complete NVIC 17-14 Tasks: see above

Pre-Req - Mariner must have 180 days of service in a rating at least equal to that of a wiper or coal passer including: Electrician/Refrigerating Engineer; Oiler; Fireman/Watertender; Junior Engineer; Pumpman/Machinist; QMED – any rating.
