## Course description
**Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities - Course #142**

Each student who successfully completes this course will have the
theoretical knowledge to successfully be able to:

- Comply with emergency procedures

- Take precautions to prevent the pollution of the marine environment

- Observe safe working practices

- Contribute to effective communications on board ship

- Contribute to effective human relationships on board ships

This ½ day (4-hour) course is one of the four modules of STCW Basic Training. There are no tonnage limits on this course and it will satisfy STCW VI-1-4. This USCG-approved course is substantially similar to IMO Model Course 1.21, *Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities*.

This course satisfies the Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(a)(4) and 12.602(a)(4); STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-4, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) Tasks 5.1.A, 5.2.A, 5.2.B, 5.3.A, 5.3.B, 5.4.A, 5.5.A, 5.6.A, 5.6.B, 5.6.C, 6.1.A, 6.2.A, 6.2.B, 7.1.A, 7.1.B, 7.2.A, 7.2.B, 7.3.A, 7.4.A, 7.5.A, 7.5.B, 8.1.A, 8.1.B, 8.2.A, 8.3.A, 8.3.B, and 9.1.A.

Applicants who have successfully completed this course need not present completed “Task Control Sheets” for these assessments in application for STCW certification.

This class is scheduled in conjunction with the Personal Survival Techniques course which is 1 1/2 days. PSSR is four hours in the morning or afternoon depending on the pool schedule which is also approximately 4 hours of practical training conducted the same day.

This day may run longer than the average classroom day as there are also transportation issues and weather can affect the pool schedule. Generally the full day will run until about 1700-1730. Typically this is day two of the course but can be a different day depending on the schedule.

## Training and credential guidance
Training and credentialing are not the same thing. Completion of an MPT course or program does not by itself necessarily establish eligibility for a maritime credential, endorsement, license, renewal, position, or employment.

Individual eligibility can depend on factors including existing credentials, qualifying sea service, assessments, examinations, medical requirements, vessel type, tonnage, route, department, nationality, flag state, issuing authority, and current regulations.

Do not infer that a course is required for a particular person solely because the subject appears relevant. Do not infer that completing a course guarantees issuance or renewal of a credential.

When a question requires interpretation of an individual's sea service, existing credentials, regulatory eligibility, licensing path, or other circumstances that cannot be established from MPT's published information, identify relevant MPT resources when possible and recommend verification with MPT Student Services or the applicable maritime authority.

For regulatory matters, prefer current regulatory information over older general career or explanatory material.

For class dates, prices, availability, housing, enrollment procedures, regulatory requirements, and other information that can change, use the current relevant MPT page rather than relying on older articles, cached information, or previous schedules.

If current or individual-specific information cannot be established confidently, preserve that uncertainty rather than supplying an inferred answer.
