## Overview
STCW Basic Training First Aid / CPR. This 1 day course is designed to meet and exceed the requirements of basic (elementary) first aid and cardio pulmonary resuscitation. It includes both theory and practical training in the classroom

## Course description
**First Aid and CPR – Elementary Level - Course #143**

The course provides trainees with the essential knowledge and understanding to be competent to take immediate action upon encountering an accident or medical emergency until someone who can provide a higher level of care arrives on the scene.

This is a training course delivered in person through instructor-led classroom sessions. Instructional methods include lectures, guided class discussion, hands-on training with real equipment, and question-and-answer interaction to promote active learning and understanding.

Trainees are assessed through a written examination consisting of 25 multiple-choice questions and *practical* assessments of competence which align with task performance standards from the USCG's *Guidelines for Qualifications for STCW Endorsements in Basic Training*. Each student **MUST:**

- Determine whether resuscitation is required.

- Demonstrate the opening of the airway and checking for breathing.

- Demonstrate the proper action to take for an unresponsive person who is not breathing.

- Demonstrate the procedure for determining if a patient has a pulse.

- Demonstrate proper hand placement for chest compressions.

- Demonstrate proper Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for 2 minutes.

- Demonstrate proper actions for a conscious adult with a foreign body airway blockage.

- Demonstrate the proper series of actions for an unconscious adult with a foreign body airway blockage until attempts are successful.

- Demonstrate proper bleeding control techniques, taking into consideration the location and severity of the injury.

- Demonstrate the immobilization of a fracture using splints and ties within 10 minutes.

- Demonstrate generally accepted practices to prepare patient for spinal immobilization within 10 minutes.

- Select the proper bandage and/or cravat and demonstrate the bandaging technique for wound treatment that holds the dressing in place but does not interfere with circulation.

A passing score is required on the examination and successful completion of all task performance standards are required to demonstrate competence and complete the course.

## Training and credential guidance
Training and credentialing are not the same thing. Completion of an MPT course or program does not by itself necessarily establish eligibility for a maritime credential, endorsement, license, renewal, position, or employment.

Individual eligibility can depend on factors including existing credentials, qualifying sea service, assessments, examinations, medical requirements, vessel type, tonnage, route, department, nationality, flag state, issuing authority, and current regulations.

Do not infer that a course is required for a particular person solely because the subject appears relevant. Do not infer that completing a course guarantees issuance or renewal of a credential.

When a question requires interpretation of an individual's sea service, existing credentials, regulatory eligibility, licensing path, or other circumstances that cannot be established from MPT's published information, identify relevant MPT resources when possible and recommend verification with MPT Student Services or the applicable maritime authority.

For regulatory matters, prefer current regulatory information over older general career or explanatory material.

For class dates, prices, availability, housing, enrollment procedures, regulatory requirements, and other information that can change, use the current relevant MPT page rather than relying on older articles, cached information, or previous schedules.

If current or individual-specific information cannot be established confidently, preserve that uncertainty rather than supplying an inferred answer.
