## Course description
**The ECDIS Course is approved by both the USCG, the MCA, and the Marshall Islands and is recognized by many maritime administrations to comply with the IMO requirements to complete a 40 hour generic ECDIS course.**

The 5 day EDCIS course is designed to enhance the safety of navigation by providing the knowledge and skills necessary to fully utilize ECDIS. The course incorporates the new MPT ECDIS equipment laboratory simulators. The ECDIS uses TRANSAS Software and meets IMO performance standards.

This course satisfies the following STCW Code as amended, including the 2010 amendments, training requirements

- Table A-II/1 of the STCW Code

- Table A-II/2 of the STCW Code

- Table A-II/3 of the STCW Code

**Course Objectives:**

- Each student who successfully completes this course will be able to:

- Operate ECDIS as the primary means of navigation in compliance with SOLAS and STCW regulations.

- Plan and monitor routes using ECDIS, ensuring safe passage while considering ENC data, safety contours, and system limitations.

- Interpret and respond to ECDIS alarms, status indications, and sensor alerts to maintain situational awareness.

- Integrate ECDIS with external sensors and validate positional accuracy.

- Assess risks related to over-reliance on ECDIS and apply manual navigation techniques when needed.

- Implement backup procedures and emergency protocols in case of system failure, power loss, or sensor malfunctions.

- Ensure ENC data integrity by managing updates, chart settings, and system configurations effectively.

- Demonstrate proficiency in ECDIS-based collision avoidance, route adjustments, and navigational best practices.

By the end of the course, students will have theoretical knowledge and practical competence to safely navigate using ECDIS while adhering to IMO performance standards, flag state requirements, and industry best practices.

Any applicant who has successfully completed this Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) (MARTPT-179) course will satisfy:

## Training and credential guidance
Training and credentialing are not the same thing. Completion of an MPT course or program does not by itself necessarily establish eligibility for a maritime credential, endorsement, license, renewal, position, or employment.

Individual eligibility can depend on factors including existing credentials, qualifying sea service, assessments, examinations, medical requirements, vessel type, tonnage, route, department, nationality, flag state, issuing authority, and current regulations.

Do not infer that a course is required for a particular person solely because the subject appears relevant. Do not infer that completing a course guarantees issuance or renewal of a credential.

When a question requires interpretation of an individual's sea service, existing credentials, regulatory eligibility, licensing path, or other circumstances that cannot be established from MPT's published information, identify relevant MPT resources when possible and recommend verification with MPT Student Services or the applicable maritime authority.

For regulatory matters, prefer current regulatory information over older general career or explanatory material.

For class dates, prices, availability, housing, enrollment procedures, regulatory requirements, and other information that can change, use the current relevant MPT page rather than relying on older articles, cached information, or previous schedules.

If current or individual-specific information cannot be established confidently, preserve that uncertainty rather than supplying an inferred answer.
