Course Description

Medical Care at Sea/Person In Charge - Course #406
 This 7 day course is recommended for all crew members but designed for officers and crew who will be serving as the Medical Person in Charge.  This course will satisfy the Medical Person in Charge training requirements of 46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(ix); 11.307(a)(3)(ix); 11.311(a)(3)(vi); 11.313(a)(3)(vi); 11.315(a) (3)(ii); and 46 CFR 12.621(a)(1) and (2); and Table A-VI/4-2 of the STCW Code, as amended 2010 for an STCW endorsement as Person in Charge of Medical Care; and the competence of Table A-II/2 to organize and manage the provision of medical care on board hence, satisfying the STCW requirement for a medical certification at the Management Level.

 

** This course satisfies the training requirement for candidates applying for an MCA Master 500-3000 ton Yachts. **

If you have not taken the Medical First Aid Provider 3 day Course, you may take them both consecutively for a total of 10 days. This course includes lab time at the local Hospital Emergency Room.

Prerequisites:
Medical First Aid
12 months of sea service
be medically fit to undertake the course
Oct through April (flu season) proof of having had a flu shot
Proof of a negative TB test

Overdoses, Rescue & Death At Sea, Legal Issues, Communication & Documentation, Anatomy, Patient Assessment, Respiratory Emergencies, Cardiovascular Emergencies, Defibrillation (AED), CPR, Bleeding & Shock, Burns, Environmental Emergencies, First Aid Kit, Sterile Techniques, Pharmacology, Toxicology, Muscular & Skeletal Injuries, Spinal Injuries, Lifting & Moving Injured or Ill Patients.

Please bring in your PASSPORT for Photo ID, Paper, Pencil, Pen and Highlighter. NOTE: Part of this course is completed in the hospital Emergency Department. This clinical rotation provides an opportunity to observe emergency care in the actual setting. The hospital has set forth certain requirements that must be adhered to for the well being of students and patients. Many of these requirements may be completed prior to beginning class. ** Broward Health Medical Center requires a current, negative tuberculosis (PPD) test within the past 12 months. If you have reacted positively in the past or your test currently reacts, documentation of a negative chest x-ray must be submitted. This may be obtained locally. ** A current flu shot is also required during the active flu season of October 1st - March 31st. Dress Code: Dark blue or black pants or trousers. Denim and blue jeans are not acceptable. An MPT polo shirt will be provided. Comfortable, closed toed shoes must be worn. Medical Requirements: A current, negative tuberculosis (PPD) test within the past 12 months.
