Apprentice Mate (Steersman)

This 3 week course is USCG Approved to fulfill the testing requirements for a candidate for Apprentice Mate Steersman or someone who qualifies under the old system to obtain their Master of Towing Vessel License.

This class combines the knowledge that candidates gain during the Master 100 and 200 tons courses. If you are also interested in obtaining your Master and/or Mate up to 200grt, MPT recommends that you request those certificates from your classes and sit for a crossover exam at the USCG for Apprentice Mate.

  • Tidal Calculations

  • International and Inland Rules of the Road

  • Coastal Pilotage

  • Meteorology

  • Anchoring and Mooring

  • Marlinespike

  • Docking and Undocking

  • Buoyage Systems

  • Safety

  • Voyage and Passage Planning

  • Towing Nomenclature

  • General Ship Knowledge Regulations

  • Stability and Vessel Construction

  • Seamanship

Exams:

This course is USCG Approved. No Tests at the Coast Guard. You will take written final exams administered at MPT at the end of the program. They include a selection of the topics covered in the course. We work with everyone until they pass! Do not worry. Class participation and study will get you through the exams.
