Course Description

RYA Short Range Radio License Certificate (SRC) - Course #303

The RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required to operate marine VHF radio equipment on a UK flagged vessel. This includes both fixed and handheld equipment with and without Digital Selective Calling (DSC). It is obtained by successfully completing the SRC exam conducted at an RYA Recognised Training Centre.

The short-range course enables candidates to understand how to operate modern VHF radios fitted with DSC controllers, and forms an introduction to the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. You will learn the phonetic alphabet, correct voice procedure, the GMDSS system, securite, panpan and mayday messages.

Most candidates are required to complete an RYA SRC course prior to taking the Yachtmaster practical exam, therefore the majority of exams take place after marine radio SRC courses.

MPT offers the SRC pre-assessment theory online only, which must be completed before taking the on campus practical assessment. The student is required to have the book before taking the theory portion online. If the student is taking the Yachtmaster class, the practical will take place during the class.

Course subjects include:

  • Routine operation of marine VHF radio including Digital Selective Calling the correct VHF channels (frequencies) to be used for each type of communication distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures, ship to shore communication, practical use of Marine VHF DSC radios, Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) and
  • Search and Rescue Transponders (SART)

The exam

The exam is a combination of an online written theory pre-assessment test and practical assessment in the use of Marine VHF DSC radios. Candidates must be at least 16 years old on the day of the exam.

Submission and Issuance:
Once the training and the examination are completed, the application must be mailed to the RYA for the issuance of the radio license. The RYA will charge a separate fee for issuance and this fee will be paid by MPT on behalf of the applicant (as of 5/14). If the candidate is also taking a Yachtmaster Exam, the application for SRC can be given to the YM Examiner for submission to the RYA with their credit card details to be processed at the same time as the Yachtmaster CoC. The instructor will help you coordinate the submission and answer any questions you have regarding the details of the radio license.

Career Counseling:
Career Counseling is also available by appointment at the MPT Student Services Office. This is helpful to choose the best radio license for you depending on your career goals and nationality.
