USCG Gap Closing Courses to Meet STCW 2010

Ask Amy:  USCG Gap Closing Courses to meet STCW 2010?

The USCG GAP Closing requirements are required for all STCW Compliant Mariners sailing after the 1st January 2017. These requirements must be met before this date to remain STCW Compliant and sail internaionally on vessels subject to STCW, under the authority of your credential.

If you do not complete the Gap Closing Training, applicable to your level of MMC, you may be restricted to only serve nationally (domestically) after 12/31/16.

DECK OFFICERS:

ECDIS: Electronic Chart Display & Information System
MPT Course #601. ALL deck officers (operational A-II/1 and management levels A-II/2) sailing on vessels equipped with ECDIS must complete a USCG approved ECDIS 5 day course before 1/1/17 or they will have a restriction on their MMC prohibiting service on these vessels.

Leadership & Teamworking/Management: HELM (O) - USCG
MPT Course #216
ALL operational level deck officers MUST take a leadership and teamworking/management course before 1/1/17. In the USCG system, this is an add-on to the BRM course. Therefore BRM #151 is a prerequisite to completing this module but may have been taken at another approved school. We strongly encourage mariners to take both at the same time, we schedule them to make this convenient and discount the price for taking them together.

Leadership & Management: HELM (M)
MPT Course #616
ALL management level A-II/2 deck officers MUST take a leadership and management course before 1/1/17.

ENGINEERING OFFICERS:

MEECE: Management of Electrical & Electronic Control Equipment
MPT Course #268. ALL management level engineering officers A-III/2 before 1/1/17.

Leadership & Management: HELM (M)
MPT Course #616
ALL management level A-III/2 engineering officers MUST take a leadership and management course before 1/1/17. ERM is required to be completed as well if not taken previously, see the next entry.

ERM: Engine Room Resource Management
MPT Course #187
ALL engineering officers MUST take an Engine Room Resource Management Course. This course is approved to include the operational level of leadership and teamworking/mgmt for engineers. If the management level engineer has not taken this course previously they will need to satisfy this requirement in addition to taking the HELM (M) course.

ALL STCW MARINERS:

All mariners that sail on voyages subject to STCW or holding an MMC that is STCW Compliant, must maintain a current set of safety (Chapter VI) courses by their first renewal AFTER 1/1/17. This includes the following as applicable:

BASIC SAFETY TRAINING: STCW VI/1(1-1 through 1-4)
ALL SEAFARERS:

ALL SEAFARERS HOLDING FRB QUALIFICATION: without 360 days of qualifying sea service in the previous 5 years must have an STCW FRB Training Refresher Certificate (MPT Course #147) every 5 years.

MEDICAL TRAINING: STCW VI/4        (4-1 / 4-2)
There is currently no USCG/STCW requirement to renew medical first aid or person in charge training. We strongly encourage mariners to refresh on this important subject every 5 years however there is no USCG requirement to do so. Many companies require or recommend their personnel to maintain a current certificate and certain flags require it as well. Check with your flag state.
